The Arri M40 HMI System with High Speed Ballast pairs an M40 open-face HMI lamphead with a 2500/4000W electronic high speed ballast (1000 Hz) that includes an Active Line Filter (ALF) and DMX control. Designed for film and broadcast sets that need a powerful daylight-balanced source with flicker-safe operation for high-speed shooting, this system delivers the punch and crisp shadows of a PAR-style fixture with the focusing control you would expect from a Fresnel.

Lens-less MAX Technology, bright output with focusing control

Like all members of the M-Series, the M40 unifies the advantages of a PAR light and a Fresnel fixture. Due to the unique lens-less MAX Technology, the unit is open face and thus very bright, but also focussable over a range of 18 to 52° HPA (Half Peak Angle), casting a crisp shadow. The reflector characteristics is optimised for 4000 W lamps, but can also be used with 2500 W lamps.

Consistent output over long cable runs (CCL)

The lamphead is equipped with a CCL module (compensation for cable loss). When operated with the ARRI EB 2.5/4 with CCL, full power is maintained all the way to the lamp even when very long cables are used. This means uniformly high light output independent from cable length, a practical advantage for stages, large locations, and exterior setups where the ballast must live far from the head.

High speed ballast control, ALF stability, and DMX integration

The high speed electronic ballast supports DMX for dimming from a control panel and works with an Active Line Filter to help minimize power fluctuations and color shifts. For crews running multiple fixtures, DMX control can simplify adjustments from a console or dimmer board, while high-speed operation supports clean results when shooting at elevated frame rates.

On-set durability and handling

Built for demanding production environments, the M40 includes a tubular steel yoke, two disk brakes with a steel handle, and cross cooling for safe operation at extreme tilt angles. The fixture is rated IP 23 for added protection in real-world conditions. The system is also noted as around 30% brighter than AS 40, with the same size as AS 40 but over 3 kg lighter (as stated by the manufacturer).
